Chapter 10

A heavy beat overflowed from the club out onto the street. Women in short dresses or tank tops poured into the club. A guy dressed in black checked IDs at the door.

“Is this a lesbian club?” I whispered to Zen. “Do they even have those?”

She chuckled. “No. It’s a regular club but I happen to know a lot of lipstick lesbians hang out here.”

Watching the girls file in, balancing on stilettos, sequins flashing in the street light, my shoulders sagged a bit. “I don’t think I have much in common with these women.”

Zen tsked. “Give it a chance. You of everyone should know not to judge a book by its cover.”

“That’s bullshit. Everyone judges books by their covers.”

Ignoring me, she made for the door. The only thing that cut through my nerves was watching her ass. Like most girls in line, Zen wore a short skirt – black with a little flare at the bottom that suited her flirty personality. Her legs were clad in black fishnets. God, did they look good. The top she wore barely covered her midriff, and when she moved, it flashed a peek at her bellybutton, which was pierced.

I felt momentarily mesmerized as I watched her. How did she manage to make her hips sway so naturally with every step? My hands itched to touch…

She stopped suddenly, and I almost bumped into her.

“Watch where you’re going, sunshine,” she teased.

After a short wait in line, we entered the club. It was loud, overstimulating, and crowded. Some of my least favorite things. Zen headed straight to the bar. Alcohol. As good a plan as any to get me through this.

“Shots?” she asked, yelling over the noise.

I nodded.

She said something to the bartender. A few minutes later, six shot glasses appeared, lined up on the counter. She handed me one. I gulped it down, squeezing my eyes shut at the bitter taste.

Gah! What the fuck was in that?

Immediately, she gave me two more. I didn’t think. Just drank them down. I’d need the courage.

“Let’s get on the dance floor,” she said in my ear.

Before I could protest, she grabbed my hand and pulled me away from the bar. “How am I supposed to meet anyone here?” I yelled to her. “I wouldn’t even be able to hear their name.”

She pulled me close to her, wrapped her arms around me, squeezing in between undulating bodies. Close to my ear, she said, “Wait until someone catches your eye. Then flirt. If she flirts back, dance together. You could spend all night pressed against someone, falling for them, without ever knowing their name.”

I grimaced. “That doesn’t work for me. I need conversation. Not just…a hot body. I want a brain too.”

“No, you don’t.” Our bodies moved together to the beat, even as she rasped in my ear. “You want a hot date to show off at the wedding.”

“I…I think you misunderstood me.” Before I could explain, I felt a body press up against me from behind.

Zen looked over my shoulder then smiled.
